Sometimes a website loses customers not because of something it lacks, but because of small mistakes that make it annoying. A visitor will rarely tell you “I left because I couldn’t find the phone number” — they simply close the tab. Here are the seven most common mistakes and how to avoid them.

1. A slow website

The most expensive mistake. Every extra second of loading time loses visitors — and Google pushes slow sites down the rankings. If a page opens sluggishly, a large share of people leave before they ever see your offer. Speed isn’t a luxury, it’s a foundation.

2. A poor mobile version

More than 70% of visitors are on a phone. A site that looks good on a computer but is awkward on a phone — tiny text, buttons you can’t hit, horizontal scrolling — loses the majority of its visitors. The mobile version isn’t secondary; it is the main one.

3. Confusing navigation

If a visitor can’t find what they are looking for within seconds, they give up. Too many menus, unclear page names, no logic — all of it confuses. Navigation should be so simple that no one has to think about where to click.

Rule of thumb: a visitor should reach any important piece of information in two or three clicks at most. If it takes more, the structure is too complex.

4. Hidden or hard-to-find contact details

A surprisingly common problem. The phone number is somewhere at the bottom in small type, the form is complicated, and the person who was ready to get in touch gives up. Contact details should be visible on every page, the phone number tappable, and the form short.

5. No clear call to action

A site with no clear instruction on what the visitor should do relies on them working it out for themselves. Most don’t — they read and leave. Every page should lead to a specific action: a call, an enquiry, a booking.

6. Cluttered design

The opposite extreme of an empty site. Too many colours, fonts, pop-ups, flashing elements and text everywhere overwhelm the visitor. When everything is screaming for attention, nothing stands out. A clean design with space around its elements sells better than a crammed one.

7. Weak or missing photos

Stock photos everyone has seen, or blurry amateur shots, damage trust. Real, high-quality photos of your team, your premises and your work do the opposite — they make the business feel genuine and approachable. For visual businesses (a restaurant, a salon, a hotel) the photos are quite simply half the sale.

Quick test: open your site on your phone and try to find the contact details and work out what you offer within 5 seconds. If you struggle — so do your customers.

The small irritations add up

None of these mistakes on its own looks fatal. But a customer doesn’t experience them one at a time — they take in the overall impression, “this website is annoying”, and go to the competitor whose site simply works smoothly. Removing friction is one of the most underrated investments in winning more customers.

Summary: The seven mistakes — a slow site, a poor mobile version, confusing navigation, hidden contact details, no call to action, cluttered design and weak photos — drive customers away unnoticed. Each one chips away at a little trust and convenience. Open your site on a phone and check for yourself: if you are getting annoyed, your customers have already left.
